The communication tools at our disposal are failing to facilitate the all-important interpersonal relationships which make networks of people flourish. Without bonds rooted in trust and compassion, we’ve collectively been engaging in difficult conversations around inclusion, diversity, and purpose without the groundwork necessary to have those conversations. I co-founded Nomie to offer an intentional way for groups to lay this groundwork. Our solution leverages digital tools to contextualize communication networks within the interpersonal context. In our experimentation, we strive to make a difference by designing tools and technology which foster play, introspection, and trust. In November 2020, Nomie won 1st place in the Coopérathon open call for ideas, securing the project a $10,000 grant from the Ministère de l'Éducation in Québec. Over the course of 2021, we have launched live pilot studies with over 200 users and are iterating on an MVP of a web-tool plug-in. In September 2021 we were invited to join the social innovation incubator District 3. This collaboration has inspired us to use more co-design and collaborative methods in our research and design process. We are now seeking collaboration and funding from local communities in Montreal. Our hope is to keep building and learning in a co-design method so that one day we may officially launch our refined product to workplaces interested in making important cultural changes. One strategy technologists use to mediate connection is creating games, which offer fun, emotionally-rich spaces for dynamic social interactions. Other researchers have leveraged advancements in generative AI to explore social communication. In this paper we explore how a game using text-to-image models might induce emotionally intimate conversations. Closer Worlds is an ML-assisted 2-person experience which asks personal questions and creates images in a playful world-building scenario. We explore design principles inspired by facilitation research and assess their effectiveness in a pilot study with 24 participants. We conclude that Closer Worlds elicits self-disclosure behavior, but less than a similar game without the use of generative AI. What language do we have to describe the immense social, emotional, political, and ecological consequences of technological innovation? Impractical Questions engages with this challenge by prompting conversation through an unconventional medium: Mad-libs. Part silly game, part social experiment, the participatory activity asks you to situate emerging technology alongside things of real personal and emotional value – like your favourite toy as a child, or go-to comfort activity. Through playful absurdity, I present an invitation to think outside of the well-worn narrative of technology development, which tends to conveniently align with business interests instead of felt human and non-human experiences. In the face of intensifying social fragmentation and collapse of shared reality, we look to ancient wisdoms such as small-group dialogue and sensemaking to inform the design of a novel, AI-supported pro-social communication space: the social dialogue network. In this exhibition, visitors walk through the conversations which make up the social dialogue network and are challenged to consider how stories gathered through facilitation practice differ from typical interactions on social media. The piece shepherds us towards an understanding of the value of personal narrative in engendering trust and how we surface underheard voices with privacy and authenticity.
